The Wiregrass Oral History Project is a project to collect, archive, and make available to students, researchers, and the general public the oral history of the Southwest Georgia and North Florida area. Often referred to as Wiregrass Country, much of the political, social, and cultural history of this rural area has been lost through a lack of documentation and too few historical studies. This project is an attempt to rectify that and record its history for future generations.

Once collected, the original recordings and the transcripts will reside in the Special Collections of Bainbridge State College. Once proper release forms, preservation measures, and transcriptions have been completed, these materials will be made available to students, scholars and the public.

Digitized collections will also be provided online once resources are available.

While all historical topics are of interest, each year a specified topic or theme will be identified and sought after. Such themes may include:

  • history of Bainbridge State College
  • history of agriculture
  • history of education
  • music & folk traditions
  • the Civil Rights Era
  • the Great Depression
  • veterans of the Wiregrass Area

Interviews will conducted by faculty and properly-trained students. Donations of interviews will also be accepted.
