Rubrics help instructors build better assessments by forcing them to think through exactly what constitutes good performance on an assessment as well as how to judge each criteria. Rubrics also help students by telling them very clearly what is expected in any assignment as well as how to achieve the highest possible score. Together then, rubrics help both instructors and students with assignments. While not necessarily appropriate for every assignment in a course, instructors should consider creating rubrics for some assignments at least for their own use in grading and also release to students.
