Computer Use Policy
Introduction
Bainbridge College is committed to free/open inquiry
and discussion, the advancement of learning, and the
application of modern technology for personal and professional
development. Students, faculty, staff and administration
are encouraged to explore the capabilities of computing.
Computing resources at Bainbridge College are readily
available in offices, laboratories, and the library.
Because the nature of academic computing tends to involve
a personal relationship between the user and the computer,
it is easy to forget that the user does have responsibilities
to others in an open environment and to those who are
providing the services being used. Therefore, the following
are the policies for computer use at Bainbridge College.
While these policies are intended to comply with legal
and University System requirements and to provide guidance
to users, the constantly changing technical conditions
in computing may require that many decisions affecting
computer use may have to be made by knowledgeable people
at the time they are needed rather than prescribed in
advance. If these policies do not provide the necessary
answers to questions, the user is advised to seek out
one of the people who have assignments supervising computer
resources.
Finally, these policies apply to all users of computer
equipment at Bainbridge College: faculty, staff, administration,
students, and guests.

Computer Use Policies
1. Users in laboratory settings must be mindful of
the other users in the laboratory:
a. Please maintain a quiet environment, unless providing
instruction. Avoid disturbing others.
b. Please remember that some materials accessed may
be offensive to others in the laboratory. Avoid commenting
on or calling attention to what has been accessed.
2. Some materials are copyrighted. Users must get permission
from the copyright holder AND either a faculty member
or a computer services administrator before "downloading,"
copying, installing, and/or using copyrighted material
to or with College computer resources.
3. Users must do their own work:
a. Leave other users' work alone. Avoid copying or deleting
their work. This policy applies to files independently
created and/or email messages. Under Georgia law, invading
other users work, copying or deleting their work or
creating the impression that they did the work when
they did not are each punishable by $50,000 fines and
15 years imprisonment.
b. Some programs and laboratories require passwords.
Users should keep their passwords to themselves. Avoid
sharing passwords. Under Georgia law disclosure of passwords
can be punished by $5,000 fine and 1 year imprisonment.
4. Please limit materials accessed (by disk or internet)
to those items appropriate to classes, research, or
writing of reports. Avoid using College resources for
non-College purposes.
5. Leave things as you find them!
a. Follow proper shutdown procedures. If you are not
sure what they are, ask.
b. Leave destructive programs such as viruses or "Trojan
horses" at home.
c. Configurations are set up for the specific uses of
classes or instructors. Leave system configurations
as they are. Only selected members of the faculty/staff
are permitted to reconfigure software or hardware on
campus.
6. Users must back up their work to their own disks.
It is not wise to try to store confidential work on
College resources. These resources are not private.
College authorities may review activity on email accounts.
Similarly, other documents may be subject to the Georgia
Open Records Act.
7. Use communications systems properly. Let others
use communications without interference.
8. Users must check with and obtain permission from
College authorities before connecting any computer to
the College's network(s), server(s), or individual workstations.
9. All users shall share computing resources in accordance
with the policies set for the computers involved, giving
priority to more important work or to those users who
were "there first," and cooperating fully
with the other users of the same equipment.
10. While computing resources at Bainbridge College
generally are available, there are times when only authorized
users are permitted.
a. Guests and visitors seeking to use Library, computer
laboratory or Student Center computers must register
with the appropriate official or have a faculty member
arrange for usage prior to attempting to access computing
resources. Some laboratories require all users to sign
in.
b. Credit and non-Credit classes always have priority
in laboratories. Computer labs have schedules posted
providing information as to when or whether there are
"open" times for non-class member users.
c. Misrepresentation of authorization, identity, or
relationship with the College for the purpose of obtaining
or using computer or network resources will lead to
expulsion from the campus.
11. Think! If what you are sending using the college
resources would embarrass you or hurt others - don't
send it. Avoid fraudulent, defamatory, harassing, obscene,
or threatening messages or any communications you suspect
may be prohibited by law. It is relatively easy to identify
not only the institution but also the individual sending
inappropriate messages.
12. Users must comply with the regulations and policies
of news-groups, mailing lists, and other public forums
through which they may disseminate messages.
13. Administrators of College systems will perform
their duties fairly, in cooperation with the user community,
the appropriate higher level administrators, University
System polices, and funding sources. System administrators
will respect the privacy of users as far as possible
and will refer all disciplinary matters to appropriate
authorities. Student violation of these policies will
be considered a violation of the student conduct code.
14. A copies of these policies are available in computer
laboratories and the College Library. Copies will be
distributed to all faculty and staff. These policies
should be included in all faculty and student handbooks.
And they should be posted on the College gopher and
www sites.
15. Students who feel they have been denied fair access
to computing resources at Bainbridge College should
discuss the situation with the Vice President of Student
Affairs.

Web Policy
Introduction
Bainbridge College recognizes the World Wide Web as
an important electronic medium that will expand its
instructional, administrative, and marketing functions.
The purpose of the college web site is to further the
mission of the college by providing an electronic information
distribution and communication service. This policy
page was created to clarify the responsibilities of
those engaged in page construction and to promote accurate,
useful, and attractive web pages. Bainbridge College
acknowledges that the Web is ever changing and that
web policies will need to be continually reviewed and
modified.
There are two major audiences for Bainbridge College
web pages: Internal users, primarily students, staff
and faculty; and external users, including potential
students and alumni. In addition, Bainbridge College
recognizes that the WWW audience is literally worldwide.
