Dr. Moira Gunn at BSC on April 25

Dr. Moira Gunn will be speaking at the Bainbridge State College Kirbo Regional Center Auditorium on April 25.The lecture will begin at 7 PM and it is free. Seating is first come first served. Doors will open at 6PM. The Kirbo Regional Center is in Bainbridge, GA and may be contacted at 229-243-6428.

Former NASA scientist and engineer, Dr. Moira Gunn is best known as the host of Tech Nation, and BioTech Nation, heard on National Public Radio’s 24-Hour Program stream. In this capacity she has come to meet some of the world’s most successful women, whose lives and background stories provide insight into the path to success for young women of today.

Dr. Gunn is also a management professor at the University of San Francisco, where she founded and heads the Business of Biotech program, drawing students from across the university – from business, life sciences, information systems, law, ethics, and more. Known campus-wide as simply “Dr. G”, she requires students from all disciplines to work together, both in her courses and on her twice-yearly trips to global bioclusters.

Her own personal career path started as a data entry clerk, and educationally, it unexpectedly led her to become the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University – not even considering engineering until after she had completed her master’s degree in science. Among her many accolades and awards are the National Science Board’s 2011 Public Service Award to the Individual for her contributions to the public understanding of science and engineering, the citation of Best Biology Book of 2007 by the Library Journal, and an honorary doctorate in science.

Dr. Gunn is presented by the Bainbridge State College Cultural Arts Committee.

Author Jeff VanderMeer on Campus

The 42 Club at BSC is proud to present the 2-time World Fantasy Award winner Jeff VanderMeer at Bainbridge State College this Thursday, April 11 @ 300 PM in SWC 961 for a reading and Q & A session to follow.

VanderMeer is a prolific writer of science fiction and urban fantasy novels and short fiction (City of Saints and Madmen, Finch, The Third Bear) and (along with his wife, Ann) editor whose upcoming Southern Reach trilogy–the first volume, Annhilation, should be out by the end of this year–will be published by major New York house Farrar Straus & Giroux. The books have all been optioned by Paramount and Scott Rudin with the intention of developing those storylines into major Hollywood films.

This is a rare opportunity–and one that I hope you will take advantage of.

VanderMeer’s work is readily available on Amazon, Kindle, Nook, and at other outlets.

James Randi Biography

James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but today he is best known as the world’s most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.

Randi has pursued “psychic” spoonbenders, exposed the dirty tricks of faith healers, investigated homeopathic water “with a memory,” and generally been a thorn in the sides of those who try to pull the wool over the public’s eyes in the name of the supernatural.

He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a Fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 1986, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Humanist Association in 2012, and a Lifetime Fellowship from his peers at the Academy of Magical Arts.

On October 19, 1993, the PBS-TV “NOVA” program broadcast a one-hour special dealing with Randi’s life work, particularly with his investigations of Uri Geller and various occult and healing claims being made by scientists in Russia.

He is the author of numerous books, including The Truth About Uri Geller, The Faith Healers, Flim-Flam!, and An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural. His lectures and television appearances have delighted — and vexed — audiences around the world.

In 1996, The James Randi Education Foundation was established to further Randi’s work. Randi’s long-standing challenge to psychics now stands as a $1,000,000 prize administered by the Foundation. It remains unclaimed.

Attention Students – Summer/Fall 2013 Advisement and Registration week is Tuesday, April 2nd – Friday, April 5th!!!

Please contact your academic counselor or faculty advisor today to schedule an appointment for course advisement and registration. Your counselor/advisor is listed on your “BSC Student Information Page” (look under “Registration) of your BANNER Web account.

We highly encourage all students to meet with their academic counselor or faculty advisor when registering for classes. However, students may register themselves as long as they:

1. Have completed at least 24 “earned” credit hours
2. Have no required learning support classes to complete
3. Have no holds on their student account

Make an appointment today so that you can register for your desired class schedule before the classes fill-up!
