A recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee cited President Carter’s decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development. He is the only U.S. President to have received the Prize after leaving office.

During his presidency from 1977 to 1981, President Carter’s mediation was a vital contribution to the Camp David Accords, the treaty of peace between Israel and Egypt. Other foreign policy accomplishments included the Panama Canal treaties, the SALT II treaty with the old Soviet Union and the establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. During his presidency and even after, President Carter and his wife, Rosalyn, have worked toward resolving conflicts, promoting democracy and protecting human rights.

A native of Plains, Ga., President Carter attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and he received his bachelor’s from the U.S. Naval Academy. He also served as Georgia’s 76th governor.

Second City bringing its version of comedy to BSC Jan. 30

Chicago’s legendary comedy theater The Second City will mark its 54th year with the touring company’s “Happily Ever Laughter” series at Bainbridge State College on Thursday, Jan. 30, beginning at 7 p.m.

Drawing on classic material from The Second City archives as well as scenes ripped from the morning headlines, The Second City’s “Happily Ever Laughter” is a chance to see comedy stars in the making in an evening of smart, cutting-edge comedy.

The Second City is the leading brand in improvisation-based sketch comedy, and it is usually created at the moment it is performed. In its purest form, the dialogue, the action, the players create the story and the characters collaboratively as the improvisation unfolds in present time, without use of an already prepared, written script. With scripted and improvisational elements, audiences of The Second City always enjoy being part of the show and playing along with the next generation of comic legends.

Many of comedy’s brightest stars have hit the road with The Second City Touring Company including Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Amy Poehler, Steve Carell, Bill Murray and most recently, “Saturday Night Live” current stars Cecily Strong and Jason Sudeikis.

Scheduled performers for the Bainbridge show are Ariel Dumas, Kelsey Kinney, Eddie Mujica, Jasbir Singh, Jamison Webb and Casey Whitaker.

End: January 30, 2014 8:30 pm
