10K added to Purple Heart

Bainbridge State College’s Student Veterans of America organization will host its Purple Heart 5K and one-mile walk, along with a newly added 10K run, on Saturday, March 15, beginning at 9 a.m.

The runs begin at the College, located at 2500 E. Shotwell St., and the races will all take place on the Bainbridge State campus. The courses consist of both asphalt road and cross-country terrain. The cross-country portion has rolling hills on packed dirt roads.

Proceeds from the runs go toward the Red Hills Wounded Warrior Group Inc., which is a non-profit organization for the benefit of wounded soldiers returning from active duty overseas. The purpose of Red Hills Wounded Warrior Group is to organize outdoor hunting events with their fellow wounded soldiers that would otherwise not have these opportunities afforded to them.

Dr. Eric Dueno, Bainbridge State associate professor of chemistry and co-organizer, said last year’s event raised more than $1,000, and organizers would like to exceed that amount this year.

Runners will each get a microfiber shirt and goody bags while supplies last.

Awards are for the top three runners in all categories.

The early registration fee is $15, and to register on the day of the race is $20.

To register, go to http://www.gulfwinds.org/Calendar/2014%20Calendar/Flyers/Purple%20Heart%202014.pdf

Former President Jimmy Carter speaking

Former President Jimmy Carter will be at the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center, which is named after the former president’s dear friend and trusted adviser, on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

A recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee cited President Carter’s decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development. He is the only U.S. President to have received the Prize after leaving office.

During his presidency from 1977 to 1981, President Carter’s mediation was a vital contribution to the Camp David Accords, the treaty of peace between Israel and Egypt. Other foreign policy accomplishments included the Panama Canal treaties, the SALT II treaty with the old Soviet Union and the establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. During his presidency and even after, President Carter and his wife, Rosalyn, have worked toward resolving conflicts, promoting democracy and protecting human rights.

A native of Plains, Ga., President Carter attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and he received his bachelor’s from the U.S. Naval Academy. He also served as Georgia’s 76th governor.
