TUTOR RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION

RECRUITMENT:

Students may announce their intention to become tutors for the Academic Resource enter in one of the following ways:

  • Professor nomination
  • Tutor Nomination
  • Self-referral

Regardless of the manner in which a Student applies for a position as an Academic Resource Center tutor the selection process is the same:

  • Applications must be complete with all documents enclosed: including an unofficial transcript (either High School or College)and a copy of a current driver's license and Social Security card
    • A recommendation from a Professor for the subject to be tutored must be submitted
    • Employment Application must be signed
    • Interview with the director must be completed
SELECTION:

QUALIFICATIONS: The ARC is interested in Students who:

  • Know their subject matter well and are willing to learn more about it
  • Maintain a 3.00 or above GPA
  • Are Full or Part Time Students
  • Relate well with different personalities and cultures
  • Have good listening and problem-solving skills
  • Use good communication skills
  • Practice academic professionalism
  • Possess patience

TUTOR TRAINING:
  • Beginning of the semester workshop 5 hours
  • Periodic workshops during the semester: 6- 1 hour workshops
    • Academic Success: Study Skills, Note & Test Taking Skills
    • Leading Discussions
    • Learning Styles & Strategies
    • Six Goals of Tutoring
    • Academic Etiquette
    • Seven Principles of Academic Success
  • 9 Required DVD Workshops: 2 hours & 15 minutes
  • 6 Additional Video Workshops: 1 hour
EMPLOYMENT:
  • Tutor contracts are for one semester at a time.
  • Contracts are renewed only upon completion of on-going tutor training, tutor evaluations, and tutor meetings with the Directors.
  • All tutors are paid at the same hourly rate of $8.00 and may work a maximum of 19 hours per week.
Tutors may work up to 2 years, or 6 terms. A tutor may be retained longer than the 6 terms at the discretion of the Director.
