Work Ethics award recipients recognized in Bainbridge, Blakely

Bainbridge State College recently honored 58 of its students who have shown positive work ethics.

Fifty-one students were recognized in a ceremony held on April 10 at the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center on the main Bainbridge State campus, and eight students were recognized in a ceremony held on April 17 at the Early County Campus in Blakely.

Kathleen Ketterer, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Professional Studies that sponsors this awards program, said each student is nominated by a faculty member, and each have earned the right to be honored because they have exhibited 10 areas of work ethic standards. These standards are appearance, attendance, character, communications, leadership, organizational skills, productivity, respect, self-esteem and teamwork.

Dr. Tonya Strickland, vice president for Academic Affairs, told the Bainbridge audience that it is not the job that makes a person passionate, but how that person’s work ethics fuel the passion to do their best no matter what.

Award recipient Amanda Hurley told the Bainbridge audience how she is committed to achieving several personal goals, and all the good work ethics traits she exhibited in college will help her complete those goals.

In the Blakely ceremony, Frederick Shorter, assistant professor of English and speech, told the audience that work ethics is the No. 1 necessary job skill aside from the basic occupational skills needed to perform a job.

“Employers have stated that interpersonal skills and positive attitudes toward work are among the most important qualifications in hiring workers,” Shorter said. “This is why you are here today, and we have chosen to honor you. You stand out among others, and we want you to know that we appreciate your willingness to portray positive work ethic traits each day.”
