Comedy, hip-hop violinist, dancers and author visit BSC

Bainbridge State College recently hosted a wide variety of artists to its campus during the past two weeks.

Chicago’s legendary comedy theater The Second City marked its 54th year with the touring company’s “Happily Ever Laughter” series at Bainbridge State College on Jan. 30. The Second City’s visit is part of Bainbridge State’s inaugural Arts and Lecture Series, which is being presented this year by Allstate Construction.

The Second City is the leading brand in improvisation-based sketch comedy, and it is usually created at the moment it is performed. During their performance, the comedians involved the audience, including having Bainbridge resident Charlotte Howard on stage during one of the acts.

The next event of the series is former President Jimmy Carter’s visit on Feb. 18. Tickets are required for that event, and they have all been given out.

Another component of the Arts & Lecture Series is the Georgia Poetry Circuit, which poet and author Andrew Hudgins visited Bainbridge State on Feb. 4. Hudgins talked about his craft to Bainbridge State students and faculty members and then to the public about his poetry and a memoir he published last year.

In a lively display of talent, hip-hop/pop violinist Josh Vietti performed at the Student Wellness Center on Jan. 28.

He started playing the violin when he was 4 years old. At the age of 7, Vietti received a violin scholarship with virtuoso Mischa Lefkowitz of the LA Philharmonic and studied with him for more than 10 years. In 2006, he decided to pursue his passion for music and started street performing in Los Angeles. After opening for numerous platinum recording artists in pop, hip-hop and R&B, Vietti finally headlined his own show at the legendary Whisky A Go Go last June on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, Calif.

The fourth event was in celebration of Black History Month when the African-Caribbean Dance Company from Tallahassee, Fla., performed at the Student Wellness Center on Feb. 3.
