Acclaimed poet and memoirist, Andrew Hudgins, to visit BSC

Photo of Andrew HudginsAward-winning poet Andrew Hudgins will visit Bainbridge State College’s main campus on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

At 4:30 p.m., Hudgins will give a craft lecture for aspiring writers. A reading from his work will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a book signing. Both events will be held in the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center Solarium and are free and open to the public.

In a career spanning nearly three decades, Hudgins, who teaches writing at Ohio State University, has published nine books of poetry, including Saints and Strangers, one of three finalists for the 1985 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry; The Never-Ending, a finalist for the National Book Award in 1991; The Glass Hammer (1995), American Rendering: New and Selected Poems (2010), and A Clown at Midnight (2013). A memoir, The Joker, was also published in 2013.

“On one level The Joker is a typical coming-of-age memoir, detailing the author’s military brat, Southern Baptist, romantically clueless upbringing by ‘sour’ parents who never got over the premature death of Hudgins’s sister,” James Sullivan writes in a “Boston Globe” review of the memoir.

“But the book’s through-line—the writer’s uncanny recall for the adolescent jokes that explored ‘religious bigotry, racism, sexual discomfort and death,’ helping the young wordsmith determine just how he felt about each of those taboo topics—makes it stand apart, like the cocktail party raconteur who crosses a line and can’t find his way back.”

The event is the second of three co-sponsored during the 2013-14 academic year by the Georgia Poetry Circuit and the Bainbridge State College Arts & Lecture Series.
