Twelve Bainbridge State College students who graduated from the Licensed Practical Nursing Program were recently recognized during a pinning ceremony held at the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center on the main campus.

Sabrina Anderson of Colquitt won the Academic Excellence and Most Supportive awards, and she also gave the invocation.

Phillisa Johnson of Thomasville won the Teamwork Award. Tammy Hill of Bainbridge earned the Leadership Award, and Raven Moten, also of Bainbridge, was given the Rose Bud Award.

Keynote speaker and retired LPN Maggie Jones shared with the graduates what her impressions are of why patients thank nurses.

“Over the years, I’ve noticed that the predominant theme of those thank-you cards we get from patients is gratitude for the little things we do for them–answering the call light promptly, speaking compassionately, giving them something to drink, placing the phone by their ear when they’re unable to, holding their hand, bringing them a newspaper, and my personal favorite, trimming their nails and washing their hands,” said Jones, who is the Florence Nightingale president for the Southwest Georgia Region.

“To our new colleagues, I’d like to stress that whatever field of nursing you pursue, don’t forget the little things, share your knowledge with all, and invoke Florence Nightingale–the founder of modern nursing for our modern times,” Jones said.

After Jones’ address, the 12 graduates recited the Florence Nightingale Pledge, which is an adaptation of the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians that reinforces the concept that nurses practice their profession with loyalty, commitment and compassion.

The 12 graduates are: Sabrina Anderson of Colquitt; Barbara Auston of Blakely, who completed her degree at the Early County Center; Skyler Faircloth of Cairo; Tammy Hill and Raven Moten of Bainbridge; Jarimeka Clayton, Phillisa Johnson and  Nakesha King and of Thomasville; Jackie McLendon and Beth Womble of Donalsonville; Gashebal Robinson from Arlington, Ga.; and, Robbie Weaver of Havana, Fla.
