40th-Anniversary Gala honors founders

Bainbridge State College’s 40th-Anniversary Gala both celebrated its founding and, thanks to its sponsors and supporters, created a scholarship.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, more than 200 people filled the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center on the campus of Bainbridge State to mark the College’s establishment in 1973. Among those attending were founding members of the faculty and staff, including founding president and first lady, Dr. Edward and Martha Mobley, who received a standing ovation when introduced by Bainbridge State President Richard Carvajal.

“I loved that we were able to recognize all of the faculty, staff and community leaders – both past and present – who have helped make us the College that we are today,” Dr. Carvajal said. “I especially loved the amazing reception our founding president and first lady received from everyone in attendance. Folks really showed that they appreciate what our founders did to build this College, and for me, that was special.”

Dr. Carvajal said there were two goals for the event: First, the College’s foundation successfully funds a scholarship to honor the College’s founders; and second, to put on a fun celebration for everyone who loves Bainbridge State.

“I know we successfully met our first goal, and based upon all of the positive feedback we have received from those in attendance, it’s clear that everyone had a great time too,” Dr. Carvajal said.

All proceeds of the event went to establishing a Founders Scholarship. Money from sponsors, ticket sales and auction purchases went toward creating the $15,000 endowed scholarship, which will earn interest that will be paid as scholarships to deserving students beginning next year and for years to come.

Dr. Carvajal thanked the sponsors, the generous donors who gave items for both the silent and live auctions, numerous local restaurants and caterers who offered samplings of their food as part of a chef’s sampler, those who purchased tickets for the event and the many volunteers.

“It was a truly special night in the life of our College, and all of us at Bainbridge State are grateful that we are in such a supportive region,” Dr. Carvajal said.

Dale Fuller, the executive director of Institutional Advancement, said an added bonus was the many new people who got to visit Bainbridge State for the first time.

“Two of our biggest goals were to get people on our campus and provide a scholarship for students,” Fuller said. “We were able to do both on Saturday.”
