Bainbridge State College recently announced new administrative staff and faculty promotions along with restructuring of the Office of Admissions and Records.

Those promoted are Pamela Barnes, director of first-year experience, and Ridge Harper, director of student success and retention.  Additionally, Emergency Medical Technology instructor Charles Avery now serves in a full-time capacity.

The office formerly known as the Office of Admissions and Records has been separated to better serve students.  Spencer Stewart now serves as the registrar under the Office of the Registrar, and Melanie Cleveland is director of admissions. Corey Chapman has been promoted to academic counselor.

Charles Avery recently assumed the role of full-time instructor of Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician programs. Avery has been with Bainbridge State for more than two years as an emergency medical services (EMS) continuing education instructor, and recently as interim instructor for the EMS programs.

Prior to teaching at Bainbridge State, Avery was a clinical instructor for Darton College’s paramedic program. For almost six years, Avery was a paramedic and field-training officer with the Decatur County and Seminole County emergency medical services. He continues as a paramedic for Seminole County, and he has worked part time in Miller, Grady and Early counties and with the West Georgia EMS.

Avery is working toward a bachelor’s degree in paramedicine from Darton College, where he earned a diploma in paramedicine in 2005. He also earned an EMT-I certificate from Bainbridge State and an EMT-B/Combat Medic from the U.S. Army Medical Center and School.  Avery and his wife, Stamey, live in Colquitt, Ga., and have five children: Austin, 10, Alaina, 9, Maggie, 8, Steve, 6, and Jake, three months.

Pamela Barnes holds the newly created position of director first-year experience at Bainbridge State, which will assess the effectiveness of the first-year experience curriculum and pedagogy.

Prior to her promotion, Barnes was senior academic adviser and adult learning specialist, where she helped with the development of a comprehensive student success program that promoted student success, retention and graduation. She also created an interactive tutorial for new students on how to use Bainbridge State’s website. Barnes previously served as the college’s adult learning and retention specialist, where she developed numerous programs and services for non-traditional students. Prior to coming to Bainbridge State in 2010, Barnes worked for different private companies as support staff for executives and accounting departments.

Earlier this year, Barnes earned a master’s in education, specializing in adult education and workforce development from Valdosta State University. In 2004, she earned a bachelor’s in theater from Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. Barnes serves as chair of the board of directors for the Bainbridge Little Theatre.

Corey Chapman was promoted to academic counselor in the Office of Student Success and Retention. For about two years, he was an admissions specialist at the College’s Early County Center where he processed new student applications, articulated college and high school transcripts, and processed other admission documents. Prior to his tenure at the College’s Blakely site, Chapman was an eighth-grade substitute teacher at Early County Middle School. A resident of Colquitt, Chapman earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville in 2009.

Melanie Cleveland has been Bainbridge State’s director of admissions since July. Since January, Cleveland was an admissions adviser and recruiter at the college, which entailed visiting more than 30 high schools in Southwest Georgia and planning events recruiting students to start their higher education or technical college career at Bainbridge State. She also coordinated open house twice a year for incoming students.

Prior to Bainbridge State, Cleveland was a community relations specialist with ITT Technical Institute in Tallahassee, Fla., where she recruited potential students and mentored ITT Technical Institute students through the admissions process. Cleveland also served as an admissions counselor/recruiter and athletic counselor at Darton College in Albany, Ga., from 2005-11. She recruited potential students, ensured their success once they were students and worked with the coaches of Darton’s athletic programs to assist with their student-athletes admissions and retention.

Cleveland earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in marketing from Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, and she began this fall her studies for a master’s in public administration from Valdosta State University.

Ridge Harper was promoted to director of student success and retention after he had been assistant registrar for almost two years.  For two years prior to that, he was the College’s coordinator of testing and career services for two years. In May, he was awarded the Meritorious Staff Award for service to Bainbridge State during the 2012-13 academic year. Harper earned a master’s in social science in 2009 and a bachelor’s in anthropology in 2001, both from Georgia Southern University. He also attended College of Coastal Georgia, earning credit in physical and natural science courses.

Spencer Stewart was recently named Bainbridge State’s registrar, where he will maintain the integrity of the academic record of the College, which includes grades, drop/add, withdrawals, drops for non-attendance, transcript articulation and issuance, program completion, degree completion, degree confirmation, honors night and graduation.

In March 2011, Stewart was named the director of admissions and records, and prior to that, he was assistant director for eight years. Stewart started at Bainbridge State in January 2004 as a payroll accountant, and 11 months later was promoted to assistant director of admissions.

Stewart earned a bachelor’s in accounting from Troy University and a master’s in business administration from the University of West Georgia. He and his wife, Angela, have a 3-year-old daughter, AnnaLane.
