Dr. Michael Stewart was recently named dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

Bainbridge State College recently named Dr. Michael Stewart as dean of its School of Arts and Sciences after a nationwide search.

Dr. Stewart had been serving as interim dean since last August.  He came to Bainbridge State in 2008 as an assistant professor of sociology and was recently tenured as an associate professor of sociology.

“I am very honored and excited to be offered the position of permanent dean of Arts and Sciences. It is wonderful to work with such a dedicated and passionate group of faculty and staff,” Dr. Stewart said.

As dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Stewart will manage the school’s daily operations; develop, plan and account for its overall success and continuing growth, and supervise 35 full-time staff and faculty members, as well as more than 30 part-time instructors, who work with an estimated 750 students enrolled in Arts and Sciences.

“Bainbridge State is very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Stewart’s caliber to lead our School of Arts and Sciences,” said Bainbridge State President Richard Carvajal. “He has been a great faculty member, and in the last year, he proved that he could be a great dean when he served in an interim role.  I know that he will continue to do an excellent job working with our faculty to maximize student learning and success.”

A resident of Havana, Fla., Dr. Stewart came to Bainbridge State from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., where he was an instructor and teaching assistant, and where he earned his doctorate and master’s degrees. Dr. Stewart earned his Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology in 2008 and his Master of Science in Sociology in 2002, both from Florida State. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Psychology from East Central University in Ada, Okla., in 1996.

In 2005, Florida State’s Department of Sociology awarded Dr. Stewart the Best Graduate Student Teacher Award.

“Dr. Stewart is creative, caring, principled and thoughtful in all that he does. He brings both energy and vision to academic affairs,” said Dr. Tonya Strickland, vice president for academic affairs.

While at Bainbridge State, Dr. Stewart has served on a variety of committees or councils that enhance Bainbridge State’s students’ experiences or engagement with the community. For example, he was the faculty adviser for the Circle K chapter at Bainbridge State for almost four years, and he presently is the faculty adviser for the Alpha Gamma Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.

“I see our school and college doing many great things for our students and the community in the future, and I am pleased to be able to play a role in that progress,” Dr. Stewart said.
