Kirkland named March ‘One Matters’ recipient

Bainbridge State College is pleased to announce the “One Matters” reward recipient for March.

On March 16, Dr. Michael Kirkland, Associate Professor of History & Humanities, was named the “One Matters” reward recipient. He was nominated by his colleague, Dr. Jenny Harper, Associate Professor of Biology, who took notice of Kirkland’s strong commitment and dedication to his students.

To Kirkland, his focus is on the students and their successes.

He stated, “It’s all about the students.”

Recently, Harper observed Kirkland going above and beyond to help a BSC student. A student found herself going through major changes in her life, which resulted in an unexpected move from Georgia to Florida. When things did not go as the student had hoped, her professor sought to assist her.

The student was homeschooled and the Florida institution she was attempting to enroll with would not recognize her home school diploma, even with having a 3.9 GPA and 50 transferable hours of credit at BSC. Without Kirkland reaching out to his colleagues for assistance with the situation, the student would have found herself falling behind in her educational endeavors.

Through reaching out to his fellow faculty members, they were able to place the student into courses at BSC—further exemplifying Bainbridge State’s commitment to its students and community.

“Dr. Kirkland truly cares for his students individually and has such compassion for them as well,” said Harper. “Because of his help, the student was able to continue her college path and not allow an unforeseeable life circumstance deter her. There is no telling what would have happened to this individual had it not been for Dr. Kirkland’s help. I think it’s pretty awesome.”

This past fall, the “One Matters” campaign was introduced to the faculty and staff by BSC President Dr. Richard Carvajal and his cabinet. It was designed to recognize BSC employees, such as Kirkland, who make an extraordinary effort to ensure student success and retention. The recipient’s specific display of student success and retention is shared with their colleagues and the community to help encourage others by demonstrating how “one” matters at BSC.
