(Bainbridge, Ga.) – Bainbridge College President Dr. Richard Carvajal announces the naming of the lobby of the Shotwell Education Center in memory of Mrs. Joyce S. Robinson. The Shotwell Education Center houses the Bainbridge College Continuing Education, Adult Education, and Cosmetology divisions.

A ceremony was held Friday, September 7 to announce the naming on behalf of the Dewey Robinson family.

“This is truly a special day in the life of Bainbridge College, for we are gathered here today to celebrate and honor the difference that was made in our community by Joyce S. Robinson, as well as the difference that continues to be made by the entire Robinson family,” said Dr. Carvajal. “While we continue to mourn Ms. Joyce’s passing, today is not a day for tears.  No, today is definitely a day of celebration, as we will officially name this space in honor of our dear friend.”

A plaque was presented officially dedicating the space as family, college officials, community leaders, and friends looked on.

“Joyce realized how important education was in order to get a better life and create a better country,” said her husband, Mr. Dewey Robinson. “She was special to all of us and we miss her greatly.”

the skills necessary to start a career, or retool themselves for the changing careers of tomorrow,” said Dr. Carvajal. “Simply put, none of that would have been possible without the generosity of Dewey, Joyce, and the entire Robinson family, and we want everyone to know exactly who made this space possible.”

Mrs. Robinson received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Georgia. She taught first grade for several years and then helped Morningside Baptist Church start a kindergarten program where she taught for over 35 years prior to her death earlier this year.

Robinson enjoyed working in many facets of Bainbridge life. She was a volunteer for over 20 years with Hospice of Southwest Georgia and received the Bainbridge-Decatur County Woman of the Year Award in 2008. Joyce was a member of First Baptist Church of Bainbridge.
